James R Cowan Jr., M.D. has been a practicing psychiatrist in Northern New Jersey for 31 years. After graduating from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, he completed his psychiatric training at Columbia University in New York City. He also obtained a Masters Degree from Columbia University in Community and Social Psychiatry. He has been the Director of Psychiatry at East Orange General Hospital for 25 years, building a comprehensive psychiatric program.

Dr. Maryanne Cowan, Ph.D. sparked his interest in alternative medicine in 1992. They now operate the Advanced Dimensions in Healing a complementary medicine and wellness center in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Their practice has grown into The Cowan Wellness Center. Dr. Cowan offers a variety of specialties including BioIdentical Hormone Treatment, Anti-Aging Medicine, Psychiatry and Psychopharmacology. He is also an addiction specialist as well as a Board Certified Forensic Psychiatrist. He is a nationally known speaker and published author.

Dr. Cowan is an Addiction Specialist, certified in Suboxone treatment and detoxification as well as all other substance addiction.
He is also a skilled psychopharmacologist having other 30 years experience in all areas of a clients medication needs.

Maryanne Cowan, Ph.D., Th.D., Director:

Dr. Maryanne Cowan has a psychotherapy and integrative medicine practice in Ridgewood, New Jersey. I have combined traditional psychotherapy with alternative medicine and spiritual development to offer state of the art healing modalities in a complete wellness program tailored to suit each person’s need for health and wellness. I have been in private practice for approximately 25 years refining techniques to best help people heal on an emotional, physical and spiritual level.

I received my Masters Degree in Social Work and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I also completed my Ph.D. and Th.D. from Holos Graduate Seminary with a doctorate in Integrative Health Care. I was trained at Holos University by Dr. C. Norman Shealy, a pioneer in the field of Holistic Medicine and a prolific author. Along with my husband, James Cowan, Jr., M.D. we have developed a unique practice, combining traditional medicine with the latest in Alternative Medicine. My philosophy is that in order to treat the whole person the inclusion of modern medicine with state of the art alternative medicine technology and spiritual practices is the best way to achieve lasting emotional and physical health.

In the last seven years I have introduced BioIdentical Hormone Therapy into our practice. My training includes EPC/GDV by Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, of Russia, Bioresonance by Dr. Gabor Ludvinski of Hungry and our latest technology, Ondamed with advanced training with the inventor Dr. Rolfe and Sylvia Binder and Dr. Wolf Kessler of Germany. Many of the latest technology in alternative treatments is found in Europe, however we are seeing many advancements in the United States as alternative medicine increases scientifically and practiced on a larger scale. I work to be involved in the newest and most advanced technology available in the field of integrative medicine, bringing it into our office to most effectively treat clients.
We are experiencing amazing results with the combination of our systems and variety of high quality practitioners from many disciplines in the field to assist in our wellness institute. I continue to provide my brand of psychotherapy to those seeking emotional work and healing.

I am also the mother of three children; one son and two daughters and have been on a wonderful journey with my family.
